COTA SA is proud to be a partner in the residency program of Dr Alexandre Kalache as Adelaide’s new Thinker in Residence. Ian Yates, COTA Senior Voice Chief Executive congratulated Premier Mike Rann and the South Australian Government for bringing Dr Kalache, a world expert on ageing, to Adelaide in this important role. “Now more than ever issues associated with ageing are influencing public policy and shaping the way we plan our communities and environments to be more age friendly. The appointment of Dr Kalache as Thinker in Residence is a milestone in the future development of Adelaide and South Australia and will forever change our perceptions of ageing and the construct of our communities and environments,” says Mr Yates.
Dr Kalache is a world leading authority on ageing. He pioneered the concept of
"active ageing" and developed the Global Movement on Age Friendly Cities at the World Health Organisation (WHO) as head of the Ageing and Life Course Program, and now leads the International Centre for Policies on Ageing, Brazil.
Dr Kalache will work with partner organisations such as COTA, the Office For The Ageing, SA Health, Universities, aged care providers and other stakeholders to help build a deeper appreciation for the contribution and needs of our ageing population.
In particular, this residency will assist in the implementation of new and existing initiatives as part of the State Reform Agenda, Adding Life to Years.
Dr Kalache will work with the partner organisations to examine how we are devising and implementing policy around ageing issues according to the four key pillars of security (dealing with the vulnerability), activity (participation), health, and continuity of education. This will provide opportunities to examine issues around ageing in a more holistic way, seeing the experience of ageing as more than just a health related experience.
